“We are like islands in the sea, separate on the surface but connected on the deep.”

-William James

Ocean therapy is an evidence-based treatment that incorporates applied mindfulness, somatic-based healing tools, and experiential play practices into ocean-based activities, including surfing.

No prior swim or surf experience is needed, and each and every session is adapted to meet your physical needs. Whether you dip your toes in, float, swim, belly surf, or make it to your feet, these sessions are about tuning into your body and experiencing a connection to the natural world.

Together, we will tap into the healing power of the ocean, which provides a unique environment to regulate your nervous system and work towards your goals.

How does ocean therapy work?

  • Immersion in Nature

Humans have utilized connection to and ceremony with the natural world to promote healing for centuries. Science is now finding that being in or near the ocean can positively influence our health and well-being.

The ocean awakens our senses and invites us to be fully present. This environment facilitates self-regulation and co-regulation leaving you feeling connected, revitalized, and nourished.

  • Targeted Skill Development

Surf therapy helps you build skills in the ocean that you can translate to your life on land. The ocean acts as a mirror for our lives and inner experiences. Learning and playing in this environment will provide you with insights, valuable lessons, and rich healing resources.

My training as an occupational therapist allows me to break down the components of surfing to make it accessible for your body and to utilize this activity as a vehicle for your growth.

  • Cultivating Play and Flow

We feel the most alive when we are engaged in an activity that we enjoy. We feel free when we embrace the process of learning rather than focusing on the results. This orientation supports a “flow state” which can improve mental well-being.

Ocean and surf therapy are about rediscovering our innate ability to play. Cultivating play can reduce stress, improve cognitive function, enhance social relationships, and support use of coping skills.
